Diagnosis

• SIRS, severe sepsis, and septic shock are outdated concepts from the 1990s.
• Most recent definitions are from https://oce.ovid.com/article/00005407-201602230-00023
  • Life threatening organ dysfunction due to systemic infection
  • qSOFA (outpatient) or SOFA (ICU) score are screening tools for organ dysfunction, NOT for sepsis
  • Shock: Persistent hypotension, not responsive to fluids, requiring pressors to keep MAP > 65, and lactate > 2
