Diagnosis

  • SIRS, severe sepsis, and septic shock are outdated concepts from the 1990s.
  • Most recent definitions are from [Surviving Sepsis]
    • "Life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection"
    • qSOFA (outpatient) or SOFA (ICU) score are screening tools for organ dysfunction, NOT for sepsis
    • Shock: Persistent hypotension, not responsive to fluids, requiring pressors to keep MAP > 65, and lactate > 2
